My first experience with Blood Donation

Blood… Until very recently, I was not been educated about the essentialities of blood. I had a notion that blood which is donated is used only in cases of unusual blood loss. But that is not actually true, as blood is required critically in lot many other known and unknown circumstances like when improvement of basic body strength is required to withhold appropriate treatments, to undergo surgeries where complementing blood components is required, etc.

My first experience of donating blood was too good. I was called to provide blood for a heart patient who was to undergo an open heart surgery. My blood group was fortunately O+, which makes me a universal donor. The surgery required a large amount of extra blood for various significant medical reasons. Hence, all those people with compatible blood groups were approached. Thanks to the high awareness among people about blood donation campaigns. There were a handful of volunteers among which I and my friend were the only freshers. The hospital where we went to donate blood was well equipped. The apparatus they had and the skilled nurses there boosted our confidence. To divert donor’s mind away from the processes, beautiful songs were been played. It was very helpful for me to keep myself stable and be there till the end of the process without collapsing. Later, we were given juice and biscuits. After sitting down for about half an hour, we started to our company to resume the day’s work.
With todays’ level of technology and devices, blood donation has become simple, easy and painless. Ironically, the requirement for blood is ten times the quantity that is being donated. Blood is a renewable resource that will be replenished by our body in a very few days from the time of donation. Having such a wonderful first experience, I pledged myself to donate blood whenever and wherever possible.

COMMIT YOURSELF TO DONATE BLOOD AND SAVE LIVES.
