Ban on Endosulfan

Endosulfan is an organochlorine insecticide. It plays a vital role in controlling the insects that harm the agricultural fields. An average farmer will prefer this insecticide as it is comparatively cheaper than any other insecticides. It is believed to be the most toxic pesticide available in the market today. Because of its toxicity, it may cause a direct trouble over the epidermis in the form of rashes and skin irritation. Some fishermen, use this pesticide to aid fishing in the ponds which is absolutely risky to the people who feed upon those dead fishes. Endosulfan is also believed to be one of the harmful ENDOCRINE DISRUPTOR. It will disrupt the hormones and in some cases it will exhibit the detrimental reproductive & developmental consequences. Some of the symptoms due to acute poisoning of Endosulfan are lack of coordination, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, hyperactivity, tremors, difficulty in breathing and in severe cases, unconsciousness. Endosulfan is especially treacherous to male as this chemical delays their sexual maturity. Some of the researchers, believe that Endosulfan can also cause dreadful disease like cancer. It is very risky to use such high toxic chemicals in the fields as they can degrade the fertility of soil. It is important to preserve the soil strength and hence avoiding such chemicals will save not only human lives but also the soil fitness. Keeping this in mind, more than 80 countries including Australia, the United States, European Union, etc. have already imposed a ban on Endosulfan. India has also experienced the effects of this dreadful chemical. In Kerala, some of the villages from Kasargod District are severely affected by this chemical. People in Kerala started to raise their voice against Endosulfan and it now turned out to be a national issue. Finally a bench of Chief Justice S H Kapadia and Justices K S Radhakrishnan and Swatanter Kumar from Supreme court of India ordered a countrywide ban on manufacture, sale and use of Endosulfan.
