South Sudan- the newest nation in the world...
South Sudan is now the newest country in the world. It is to be the 193rd country recognized by the United Nations and 54th UN member from the African continent (probably by the mid July,2011). The country is oil-rich as well as under developed. It has a large swamp region formed by the river White Nile which is one of the most fertile landscapes available in that part of Africa. It is also a new entry for the list of poorest countries.
There were celebrations all around the city of Juba, the capital of South Sudan. The new flag for the nation was hoisted and the song “South Sudan Oyee” which is the national anthem, was sung. South Sudanese citizens grouped together in thousands to rejoice at the birth of their country. U.N secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, former US Secretary of state Colin Powell, president of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and president of Sudan Omar al-Bashir are some of the noted world leaders who attended the independence celebrations. Organizers felt the turn up was larger than they had planned.
The ethnic group of people from South Sudan battled two civilian wars for nearly six decades and as many as 2 million people were been killed during the wars over the past two decades. Later a peace deal made in 2005, paved way for the independence of South Sudan. The president of Sudan seems to be an unpopular figure in this region of Africa and there were ill-sentenced slogans on him in the ceremony. Diplomats believe a new conflict over the international borders is potentially to occur between South Sudan and the northern Sudan.
